Titans Cross Country/Track & Field Partners with WVRR for Capitol Mile
November 11, 2011

The annual Capitol Mile, "the Mile to Build Your Year On", has added a new sponsor. West Salem High School's Cross-Country and Track and Field Teams have partnered with the Willamette Valley Road Runners for the January 1, 2012 running event. It occurs on paved roadways within Wallace Marine Park beginning at 10 a.m.

The Titan teams will become major beneficiaries of the net proceeds along with the WVRR club's Kelsy Oldham Memorial Scholarship Fund. Annually the Club provides two $1,000.00 scholarships for student/athletes from mid-valley schools.

The entry fee for the run remains at just $10.00 up until December 26th. Thereafter, the fee increases to $20.00.

Online registration is available at SignMeUp.com. Printed entry forms are also available on-line at the WVRR website and www.titantfxc.com. Printed forms to be mailed in are available at Gallagher Fitness Resources, Monmouth Fitness and at the Courthouse in West Salem from where the run originates.

Commerative ceramic mugs full of hot chocolate will be provided to the first 175 participants who register before December 5, 2011. Questions may be directed to race coordinators Al and Jayne Oppliger at jcopplinger@aol.com.

2012 Capitol Mile Application

Welcome!

The Track and Field staff at West Salem is excited for the upcoming season.

Last year was a growing year for many of our athletes. After amazing seasons in 2007 (2nd in State / Conference Champions) and in 2008 (3rd at State / Conference Champions), 2009 was a year for our athletes to step in and get some varsity and big meet experience.

For 2011, the most recent OSAA reclassification will remove Redmond from the Central Valley Conference but add Redmond to our District Meet for State Meet qualifying purposes. The 2011 District Meet which will held May 12-13 at North Salem HS will now determine team champions for both the District Meet & CVC Conference Meet (minus any Redmond scoring). Event qualifying for the State Meet remains top two in each event.

Looking back at 2010, our boys team placed a close 3rd place (113 pts) at the conference meet behind South Salem (151) and Redmond (118). District champions (and State qualifiers) were Josh Whitney in the Shot Put, Kelby Evans in the Triple Jump, Kaden Rabago in the Long Jump, and the 4x100 Relay of Eli Manning, Miles Gorman, Jeremy Smith & Kaden Rabago. Additional State qualifiers were Miles Gorman (200m), David Clark (3000m), Brett Smith (HJ) and the 4x400 Relay of Phillip Hampton, Jeremy Smith, Brandon Harrell & Brett Smith.

Our girls team improved to 5th place at the conference meet (81.83) behind eventual winner South Salem (146). The lone State Meet qualifier was Steffani White (3000m).

For 2011, the Statesman Journal has selected the Titan boys as the favorite for the CVC title while selecting the girls team to finish in fourth place.

Our coaching staff has also added some new faces to the Titan family. Assisting in the sprints/jumps will be Titan T&F alum Erica Eweun while WSHS teacher Carlos Ruiz (former McKay/Willamete U distance runner) joins us as the new Pole Vault coach.

If you're interested in supporting the Titan Track & Field program either as a volunteer or as a donor through our fundraising efforts (or simply buying a shirt from the website) please feel free to contact me by email. I am looking forward to seeing you all at our meets.

Thank you for your continued support of our teams!
