Titans Cross Country/Track & Field Partners with WVRR for Capitol Mile
November 11, 2011

The annual Capitol Mile, "the Mile to Build Your Year On", has added a new sponsor. West Salem High School's Cross-Country and Track and Field Teams have partnered with the Willamette Valley Road Runners for the January 1, 2012 running event. It occurs on paved roadways within Wallace Marine Park beginning at 10 a.m.

The Titan teams will become major beneficiaries of the net proceeds along with the WVRR club's Kelsy Oldham Memorial Scholarship Fund. Annually the Club provides two $1,000.00 scholarships for student/athletes from mid-valley schools.

The entry fee for the run remains at just $10.00 up until December 26th. Thereafter, the fee increases to $20.00.

Online registration is available at SignMeUp.com. Printed entry forms are also available on-line at the WVRR website and www.titantfxc.com. Printed forms to be mailed in are available at Gallagher Fitness Resources, Monmouth Fitness and at the Courthouse in West Salem from where the run originates.

Commerative ceramic mugs full of hot chocolate will be provided to the first 175 participants who register before December 5, 2011. Questions may be directed to race coordinators Al and Jayne Oppliger at jcopplinger@aol.com.

2012 Capitol Mile Application

Welcome!

elcome to Titan Cross Country 2011!

I hope that all of you are having an enjoyable & restful summer and I know that alot of us are excited for the start of 2011 Cross Country season.

Certainly the predominant theme entering the 2010-11 school year is what effect the current budget crisis will have on our school year and most directly how it will effect athletics in the future.

The immediate effects for our XC teams are an increase in athletic fees, reductions to our 2011 meet schedule & the elimination of bus transportation to our contests that are located in town & the immediate vicinity.

For those of you who know me, I am a huge proponent for fiscal responsibiilty (well in advance of the budget crisis) and see these changes as positive solutions to managable problems. I understand when those not immediately connected to a school jump to the conclusion that athletics should be cut and eliminated from the budget. It is up to all of us to educate the public that based on the number of athletes served both athletically & academically each school year that athletics is one of the few programs in the District that reaches so many students for so little money.

Fact: Athletics currently makes up .78% of the budget for Salem-Keizer Schools.

Can we reduce that .78% even more while retaining a quality program both academically & athletically? Of that, I have no doubt & welcome the challenge.

For those of you who have followed our success ih the past several years, the 2010 season was another year of tremendous individual & team success both athletically & academically.

After leading the state 6A with a school record team GPA of 3.96 in 2009, the Titans girl's team finished with a 3.73 team GPA in 2010 (tied for 23rd in 6A) while the boy's team posted a team GPA of 3.61 (tied for 12th in 6A). This marked the 7th consectutive year (since 2004) that both boys & girls teams have made the DFO +3.0 GPA lists which is something that all of us are most proud of.

On the run, the varsity boys captured their 2nd straight CVC/District Meet title and qualified for the State XC meet for the 3rd consectutive year. The JV boys, although a sparse group, ran well to finish 5th at the District meet. All-CVC performers for the boys were Trent Dudley (1st team), David Clark (1st team), Emanuel Kraynick (1st team) and Brendan Abel (2nd team).

On the girl's side, the varsity girl's team finished 3rd overall at the CVC/District Meet and missed qualifying for the State XC meet for the first time in three years. The JV girls also finished 3rd at the District Meet behind three huge season's bests from the lead pack of Rebecca Elmer (10th), Jill Smith (11th) and Tiffany Dinh (13th). All-Conference & State XC meet performers for the girls were Grace Lin (1st team) and Steffani White (2nd team).

With a solid core group of returning runners, our goals for 2011 remain high. We look forward to the challenges that the 2011 season will bring us and remain focused on excelling both on the course and in the classroom. I know our team captains for 2011 are busy this summer working to ensure that 2011 produces another year of exciting times for the Titan Cross Country teams!

I hope all of you are taking advanatge of your free time during the summer and working on improving your fitness level, either on your own or as part of the summer training group. FAQs

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

For a complete list of all the FAQs click here.

  • Where can I find a copy of the 2011 XC schedule?
    - Our 2011 XC schedule is still a work in progress but you can find a copy on www.Athletic.net which covers XC/T&F for all of Oregon & beyond.

  • Where do we meet for practice?
    - Great question. Everyone usually meets by the Field House (which is at the north end of the football field). Daily practice starts at 3:00p with a warmup run. I don't usually arrive until about 3:10pm since I teach at another school. The team leaders will get practice started and be going through your warmup routine when I arrive.

  • What is the hardest part of XC? What is the best part of XC?
    - Honestly, the hardest part is the first couple weeks (getting into shape) & figuring out at what pace you should be training at. The best part is that XC is the ultimate team sport... everyone plays, everyone matters!!!

  • I haven't really ever ran before? Can I still do XC?
    - Oh yeah, most definitely! Many of our first year runners had little or no experience to begin with & they would be the first ones to tell you just how much fun XC is (once you get through the first couple weeks).

  • I'm going to miss the first week of practice. Can I still run in the 1st meet?
    - You will still need to have (15) practices prior to Sept. 8th. If you can run the workouts on your own & record them in our online Training Log, I will count those as official practices. Contact Coach Jimenez for details.

  • When is the first day of practice?
    - The first official day of practice for all Fall sports is Monday, August 22nd.

  • What type of running should I be doing during the summer?
    - In general, any running is better than doing nothing. A general goal would be 150-250 min per week. Contact Coach Jimenez for details about hooking up with our summer running group or if you want to setup your own training plan or receive the weekly summer workout suggestions by email.
